Words to Live By – Part I

In this episode, we discuss the importance of words in our Words to Live By section of Kinsmen Journal.
We ask the same four questions geared towards men for each of the following words: Abide, Consecrate, Covenant and Exalt. Scripture has much to say about the words we speak and the context for their importance. This episode is not to be missed and is a perfect companion to Volume I in print and for group discussion.

In this episode we briefly wrap up our commentary on the Fatherhood section of Volume I. In doing so, we provide some timely resources for you to explore in the new year. Also, we introduce an essay on desire by Jay Stringer. Jay is a psychotherapist and challenges each of us on the way in which we think about the subject of desire in our lives. This is a powerful essay and an episode that’s not to be missed as we start the new year.

Stay the Course, and Savor the Journey – A Legacy of Family

In this episode, we hear a poignant essay by Dr. Jon Spence. Jon writes about the legacy of his late father, Dr. Robert Spence, who was an anchor in the Springfield, MO community for nearly five decades. Jon’s words are rich with wisdom as we learn about the importance of transitioning well, setting a proper goal, seeing people for their uniqueness and value, as well as why it’s essential we invite others in and ask for help.

Experiences We Must Offer Our Children

In this episode, we combine two essays into one. Starting with a conversation on America’s pastime, and why fun and joy with our kids can be found in unexpected places. We close the episode with a timely essay by Dr. Tim Elmore, who’s known as one of the foremost leaders on the study generational differences and communication. Tim provides wisdom to us as parents, reminding us of some important tools to help shape the lives of our children.

Redeeming Fatherhood – Part III

In this episode, we wrap up the mini-series on the essay Redeeming Fatherhood. In it, Peter shares more of his personal story as well as some practical ways to engage in the dialogue of forgiveness, as well as he recites writings from Jon Tyson’s Intentional Father that can be a helpful tool in honoring the men in our lives.

Forgiveness. It’s the foundation of our Christian faith. We simply can’t give what we don’t have. As followers of Jesus, we’ve been forgiven of much, as God’s grace is abound in each of our lives, yet we often find it difficult to extend forgiveness to others, whether we realize it or not. In this multi-episode discussion in the Fatherhood section of Volume I, Peter shares more of his personal story of faith, and how God continues to refine us throughout our entire lives. 

Thoughts on Gathering Men

In this brief episode, Peter shares thoughts on recent gatherings for men called Kinsmen: Table. He also opens the dialogue as to how we can better create environments for men to find community-based on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Life Together. Peter also shares about personal transition and what’s ahead for Kinsmen, which is very exciting.

Is fear holding you back? In this episode, Dr. Jarrett shares personal stories of how God has shaped his life through wilderness and adventure. Accepting the invitation by God to take risks with him is the impetus for a fulfilled and adventurous life.
This episode will cultivate a deeper sense of how God desires to be intimately involved in each area of our life, and seeing God as a good and perfect father will result in a proper understanding of his unique desire to connect with each of us.

A Lament for Fatherhood – An Essay on Infertility

In this episode, we explore the subject of suffering, particularly regarding a man who deeply desires to become a father.
Justin Skinner shares a heartfelt and honest account of what experiencing more than 15 years of infertility looks like. This episode is important for each of us to hear as we sometimes can be left with more questions than answers when people face such difficulty and hardship.
In the midst of our pain though, there is hope. God, in his mercy and grace, invites us into the continued healing and restoration of our lives. Enjoy this powerful and necessary lament from a fellow brother in Christ.
